2002 Lakes Visit
September saw Martin Stephen and Hannah rushing up to the Lake District for a family funeral. In fact it was to inter the ashes of my uncle Julian, who had died late in 2001 and aunt Joan who had died in 2000. The ashes were to be place in the churchyard at Seathwaite in the heart of the Duddon valley, but this had to be deferred due to Foot and Mouth disease. A stone was also erected to Charles and Dorothy, Charles was the only ever stipendiary vicar of Seathwaite and died in 1936 from Pneumonia contracted as a result of tolling the bell for the death of King George the Vth. Dorothy had died earlier. The grave was not marked at the time, and locating the correct spot proved to be one of those interesting family occasions. Like the True Cross everyone had been told the site of the True Grave, but there was some interesting variation. However all was sorted out after much discussion and some refreshment at the excellent Newfield Inn which served as meeting spot for those who had travelled from all over England. The weather was fine and the exceptionally dry and the one night stop was completed without event.
